Srinagar : Police in Jammu and Kashmir Friday unearthed a human trafficking racket in Baramulla district, arresting two people, including a woman, from Bihar.
According to a police statement, a special police team, under Pattan station house officer (SHO) Mohammad Abdullah, was set up to probe continuous complaints of involvement in human trafficking against Nazir Ahmad Bhat, resident of Checki Jamal Mir in Baramulla.
During the course of investigations, it was found that Bhat had brought a woman from Bihar to Pattan and sold her for marriage, it said, adding he had hit upon a unique method.
“Later, the accused (Bhat) had managed the escape of the bride from her in-laws and got her re-married at another place to another person,” the statement said, adding Bhat charged “hefty amounts from the prospective grooms to whom he would sell the woman for marriage.”
While the woman and her first husband have been arrested by police, Bhat is still at large.
“A case under sections 366-B Ranbir Penal Code has been registered by the police and efforts are on to nab the accused.”
There have been reports for quite some time now about women, usually belonging to poor families from outside the state, becoming victims of the human trafficking mafia in the state.
