Kolkata : The CPI-M Tuesday demanded the release of its former MP Laxman Seth and two of his associates jailed for allegedly plotting violent incidents in West Bengal’s Nandigram village in 2007.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) made the demand after its unexpected win in the polls to the Haldia municipality, close of Nandigram where Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee led a successful peasants’ movement that helped the party to rally the rural voters and unseat the Left from power in the state.
“The Trinamool Congress-led government should accept the people’s mandate and immediately release Laxman Seth and other leaders who are currently languishing in jail over concocted cases,” said a statement issued by the CPI-M.
While the ruling Trinamool Congress won elections to four civic bodies, the CPI-M-led Left Front pulled off a win in the Haldia municipality of East Midnapore district. The Congress won in Cooper’s Camp municipality in Nadia.
Haldia and Nandigram are on either side of the Haldi river.
Seth, a former MP from Tamluk, which includes Nandigram, and his two comrades are among the 88 people named in the charge sheet filed Jan 30 in relation to the death of six villagers and disappearance of seven others after armed clashes in Nandigram in November 2007.
