Aurangabad: A lone police constable battled four dacoits and managed to kill two of them despite being severely injured in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district, officials said Saturday.
The incident happened around 10.30 p.m. Friday night when Ashok Ghorband, assistant police inspector at Hatta Police Station in Hingoli, went to investigate a case in Javla Bazaar village 350 km from Aurangabad, the largest city in the region.
En route, his vehicle was forcibly stopped by at least four dacoits, said Hatta Police Sub-Inspector Girid Kamble. The four dacoits attempted to rob and attacked Ghorband with axes and rods on his head and shoulders.
An injured and severely bleeding Ghorband defended with his service revolver and killed two assailants, while the other two fled in the dark to the surrounding forests.
One assailant, Kiran V. Choudhary, 27, died on the spot and another, Ganesh V. Chauhan, 25, succumbed later at a hospital in Nanded early Saturday, Kamble said.
Inspector Ghorband, though badly injured, managed to drive down to Javla Bazar village and informed local police of the incident.
