New Delhi: Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Tehran, India Saturday said it will press Iran to cooperate in the investigation into the Feb 13 attack on an Israeli embassy car here in which some Iranians were allegedly involved.
“We have not received the report of the police team which went there. As soon as we receive it, we would be able to decide what needs to be done,” Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai told reporters here. He was asked whether the attack on the car carrying an Israeli diplomat’s wife will figure in the discussions between the leaders of the two countries.
“But in general terms, when we are in Tehran and we meet at various levels – at the officials level, ministerial level – we will certainly emphasize to Iran our desire that they should cooperate fully with us so that we can get to the bottom of this attack and ensure that India is not drawn into other people’s conflicts,” he said.
Israel has accused Iran of masterminding the car bomb blast, a charge rejected by Tehran.
Manmohan Singh heads to Tehran Aug 28 to participate in the Non-Aligned Movement summit and will also hold bilateral talks with the Iranian president.
A Delhi Police team probing the incident, in which four Iranian nationals are allegedly involved, visited Tehran mid-August.
The two-member team was sent to Tehran after Iranian authorities conveyed their readiness to assist in the Delhi Police probe.
According to Delhi Police, the suspected Iranians performed reconnaissance at the Israeli embassy in May 2011 before returning to New Delhi early this year to plan the attack.
