Inaugurating a two-day programme for journalists reporting on parliamentary proceedings, she said the media was a key link between the people and the elected representatives.

“Media persons need to update and refresh their knowledge, including on the role and position of parliament and parliamentarians, besides parliamentary rules and procedures,” she said at the event organised by the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training (BPST).

“The media plays a crucial role in enabling the people to gather information and acts as a significant link between the people and their elected representatives by putting across their views,” she said.

“The duty of the media is to report facts correctly and objectively as it has an onerous responsibility of impartially projecting the concerns of the people,” she added.

Meira Kumar said the media’s contribution in conveying the substance of parliamentary proceedings and legislative activities was noteworthy.

BPST honorary adviser and MP Rashid Alvi and Lok Sabha Secretary General T.K. Viswanathan too addressed the over 125 journalists participating in the programme.
