Guwahati : Night curfew was Friday re-imposed in Assam’s Dhubri town following tension after clashes between police and protestors earlier this week, and the army carried out a flag march in sensitive areas of the district.
Tension gripped certain areas in the district Wednesday when a group of protestors clashed with police.
The district administration imposed curfew in Dhubri Thursday after protestors representing Durga Puja committees and police clashed following the stabbing of a Durga Puja pandal decorator by unidentified assailants late Tuesday night and the police failure e to nab the culprits.
“We relaxed the curfew from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday keeping in view the Eid-ul-Zuha festival Saturday,” said Dhubri Deputy Commissioner K.C. Kalita, adding that strict vigil has been maintained in all the sensitive areas of the district.
Kalita, however, said that no fresh incident had taken place in the district Friday.
Police earlier arrested eight people for their involvement in inciting the crowd to violence on Wednesday.
“Two columns (about 100 men each) of the army were deployed in the district since Thursday along with two companies of the central paramilitary forces,” Kalita said, adding that more forces are being brought to the district in view of the Eid festival Saturday.
