New Delhi: An Indian man was killed in a series of coordinated blasts and another hurt in Bahrain’s capital Manama Monday amid escalating political and ethnic unrest in the Middle East country that is home to around 300,000 Indian nationals.
India’s Ambassador to Bahrain Mohan Kumar said that Indian national Murugayya was killed.
India has strongly condemned the blasts and asked the authorities in Bahrain to ensure the security of Indian citizens, the largest expatriate population in that country. One of the blasts occurred near the Indian embassy in Manama.
Bahrain’s Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa condemned the blasts as “heinous” crime. Manama Police described the explosions that occurred in five different parts of the city as “acts of terror”.
“We have seen reports of series of bomb blasts in Bahrain this morning. We have also been informed that one Indian has been killed and another injured in the blasts,” said Syed Akbaruddin, the spokesperson of the external affairs ministry, in Delhi.
“We strongly condemn the violence. We conveyed our serious concern to the authorities in Bahrain,” he said.
“We hope, and are confident, that the authorities in Bahrain will ensure security to our citizens living and working in Bahrain,” he added.
The blasts took place amid growing pro-democracy protests, which have been going on since February 2011.
