“It is a government programme, why was it launched from the Congress headquarters,” said Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravi Shankar Prasad.

“I have also read in papers that Rahul Gandhi will monitor the scheme. In what capacity is he being asked to monitor a government scheme? He holds not official post in government,” he said.

BJP also slammed the slogan of the programme – “Janata ka paisa, janata ke haath” (people’s money in people’s hand).

“Hand is the symbol of Congress, how can they link it to a government scheme,” Prasad said.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury said “it is a pre-election stunt”.

“Before the last general election, they introduced MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) and now it is cash transfer.”
