The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N. Gopalaswami told reporters here,” “The Commission acts on the basis of complaints during the elections. We received a proper complaint from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against Sonia Gandhi only on Dec 6. The earlier complaints were not proper and were mere newspaper clippings.”

Gandhi has been served a notice for her reported reference to the Gujarat government as ‘merchants of death’ and Singh has been asked to explain his remarks on prevalence of ‘Hindu terrorism’ in Gujarat.

The CEC also denied reports of differences between its members on the Sohrabuddin issue.

The EC members Gopalaswami, S.Y. Quraishi and Navin Chawla denied a report that appeared in a local daily that the Commission had decided to issue notices to Gandhi and deferred the decision on Narendra Modi’s reply on the issue by a 2-1 split vote.

“The decision was unanimous. Had there been a difference of opinion, we would have let it be known,” the CEC asserted.

“Our legal experts are examining it. We would probably look at it Wednesday, after we get back (to Delhi),” he said.
