Hyderabad: On the occasion of 64th International Human Rights Day & Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Hyderabad based rights group Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee (CLMC) has expressed its concern on what they called “ the degrading standard of human rights.”
They further condemned the “(hostile) attitude of the Indian government towards protection of human rights.”
CLMC alleged that the Indian state is “completely ignoring the UDHR declarations.”
India is a signatory of UDHR.
Instead of protecting human rights, the draconian laws have been enacted and the human rights violated, the rights group reiterated. Many within the country are hence denied of life with dignity it alleged, particularly the most oppressed people such as minorities, Dalits and tribals, a press statement of CLMC emphasized.
Due of these draconian laws, oppressed community like Muslims, Dalits and Tribals are suffering in the name of against ‘terrorism’ and ‘operation green hunt,’ it alleged.
It reminded the government that by using draconian laws like UAPA a kind of police state is being created where many ‘innocent’ youths languish in jails for years, only to be acquitted latter by the court.
The rights group has further alleged, the “UAPA as the worst form of POTA, enacted only to suppress the Muslims and struggling masses of India.”
CLMC also reminded that people in North-eastern states and Kashmir too have to suffer under draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), where the worst forms of human rights violations are taking place.
They also expressed their solidarity with Irom Sharmila, who is on hunger strike for 12 years now against AFSPA.
CLMC further reminded the Prime Minister, “It is a matter of embarrassment that the largest democracy in the world uses draconian laws like UAPA and AFSPA.”
The press-statement by the CLMC further observed, “It is largely felt that the democratic values are degrading in the present Indian government and that it is disrespecting the people’s interests.”
It also reminded the UPA government that they had got the mandate based on their promises of enacting laws, especially to protect minority’s interests and for their security and empowerment. However, nothing concrete has so far come, it observed.
CLMC has made the following demands to the UPA Government on the International Human Rights Day:
1. Demand to repeal all draconian laws such as UAPA, Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and PD Act.
2. ‘Operation Green-hunt’ should be stopped immediately and the life and liberty of indigenous people should be protected.
3. Demand to abolish death penalty.
4. Demand to introduce Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence Bill, 2011 in the Parliament, debate and pass the bill.
