New Delhi : A Delhi court Thursday refused to grant interim bail to arms dealer and businessman Abhishek Verma and his Romanian wife in a case related to illegal possession of defence documents.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vidya Prakash rejected the plea of Verma and his wife Anca Maria Neacsu for interim bail to attend to his ailing mother.
The two were accused of possessing secret defence documents and supplying them to foreign nationals in violation of the Official Secrets Act.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had booked the couple for allegedly possessing secret documents relating to the Indian Air Force projects, acquisition plans and other information.
The couple had sought interim bail saying the mother of Verma is in critical health condition and they need to attend to her.
Additional Public Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan opposed the plea.
Mohan told court: “Verma was earlier granted bail by the Delhi High Court in the naval war room leak case in which he had possessed secret documents relating to the Indian Navy. He, however, failed to maintain the sanctity of that bail and went on to commit offence of similar nature which is before this court.”
In November 2012, the CBI filed charge sheet against Verma, his wife, their company Ganton India Pvt Ltd and former wing commander Koka Rao, who is accused of allegedly leaking the confidential documents which were later provided to the CBI by Verma’s estranged business associate C. Edmond Allen.
