Kolkata : Tension gripped a south Kolkata neighbourhood Saturday as local residents staged a demonstration over the demolition of a portion of a century-old Hindu temple by a promoter.
The incident occurred on the D.L. Khan Road under Kalighat police station area when a promoter, Tapan Ghosh, reportedly took out an idol of the Lord Krishna and demolished a portion of the temple during the construction for a multi-storied apartment.
The disgruntled locals staged a road blockade for two and a half hours at the crossing of D.L Khan Road and Bijoy Bose Road, causing a massive traffic snarl during peak hours.
They also alleged the police remained inactive and allowed the demolition.
The road blockade was withdrawn later with the intervention of police.
“Once we receive a written complaint against the promoter we would start a case and take necessary actions against him,” said an official of Kalighat police station.
Senior Trinamul Congress leaders Sovondeb Chattopadhyay, Tapas Pal and Madan Mitra also joined the protest lending political colour to the episode.
“Anyone can sell off his personal property to anybody. But the promoter who bought the property should know the sentiments of the people before taking such steps. Everyone in the area is closely associated with this temple,” Sovondeb Chattopadhyay said.
