Agra : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Sunday called for steps to increase oilseeds production in the state through use of better quality seeds and improved techniques.
“Falling oilseeds production is a matter of concern for the government as people’s eating habits are affected and the nutritional value of food is dependent on edible oil consumption,” the chief minister said while inaugurating the All India Rabi Seminar of Oil Seeds, Oil Trade and Industry at a hotel here.
Akhilesh said his government was trying hard to rapidly industrialise the state so that more and more people got jobs and enjoyed a better living standard. He said problems of the sugar industry and the “itr (perfume)” industry in Kannauj had been solved.
He appealed to businessmen and industrialists from different parts of the country, attending the conference, to set up units in the state to help its development.
Speakers said the mustard production in the Rabi season was expected to be 20 percent higher due to better conditions.
The chief minister also later presented cheques to 77 “Loktantra Sainani (Soldiers of Democracy)” or those who were jailed for opposing the Emergency in 1975-77.
