Aligarh: The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah has cautioned the students of AMU that 75% attendance will be compulsory from next academic session for appearing in the annual examinations and there will be no provision for submitting a medical certificate in case of attendance falling short of the mandatory percentage. He said he believed the medical certificates in most of the cases were fake.
The Vice Chancellor in a “Parental Advice” to students observed that he had “no objection to peaceful protests. However, blocking of roads and locking up university gates would not be tolerated and students attempting to indulge in such illegal acts would be punished”.
He urged the students to keep the so-called “student Netas” in check or he would be compelled to use ‘corrective measures’ which, being the guardian of the students, he did not want to use.
Gen. Shah said that when he arrived in the University, he had wished to ensure unhindered academic activity in the University so that the students were equipped for a bright future. He said that he had resolved “not to order closure of AMU or permit police on the campus unless things went absolutely out of control or life and property were threatened. But, his resolve had been tested by indiscipline of the office bearers of the Students’ Union and there was an attempt to attack his car when he was leaving office on March 23 last.
The Vice Chancellor lamented the “coward” behavior that some students showed in the Kennedy Hall by shouting and blowing whistles in the dark and said such behavior was seen in third rate cinema halls. He urged the students to observe proper Tehzeeb and decorum in Kenendy Hall and prove they belonged to one of the best universities in the country.
Gen. Shah affirmed that he understood students’ problems of poor quality food and water, dirty toilets, over-crowding in hostels and lack of internet connectivity. He assured them that these problems would be corrected but will take some time.
