Mumbai : The Indian capital markets opened flat Monday and slipped into the red in early trades, due to lack of buying support.
The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened flat at 20,032.67 points against the previous close of 20,030.83 points Friday.
Within half an hour, it lost 229.17 points or 1.14 percent and was trading at 19,801.66 points.
The wider 50-share S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange opened 10 points down at 6,037.95 against its previous close of 6047.70 points Friday.
Shortly after opening, Nifty declined 1.57 percent and was trading at 5,952.90 at 10.30 a.m.
Sensex had ended in the red in three out of the five sessions last week as mutual funds turned out to be net sellers.
At the end of the week, Sensex gained 0.3 percent while Nifty gained 1.2 percent.
Among the sectoral indices, BSE small-cap, BSE healthcare and BSE metal were the top gainers at eight, eight and six percent, respectively.
