New Delhi : The Delhi High Court Monday stayed a lower court’s order allowing Chandraswami, facing trial in 10 cases of Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) violation, to go abroad to visit his disciples.
Justice V.B. Gupta passed the order on a petition from the central government, challenging the lower court’s Dec 13 order that allowed Chandraswami to go abroad.
Additional Solicitor General P.P. Malhotra opposed Chandraswami’s plans to go abroad and said he was facing 10 cases in which adjudication was going on.
“Our apprehension is that once he goes abroad, he will not return to face the trial,” Malhotra said.
Earlier, the lower court, while allowing him to go abroad, directed that he could remain out of the country for only 30 days.
The court said that Chandraswami would have to attend the proceedings in the FERA violation cases, in which he allegedly owed over Rs.96.5 million as penalty to the Enforcement Directorate.
