New Delhi : The union cabinet Thursday extended by one month the term of the one-man committee set up to look into allegations that US retail giant Walmart violated Indian regulations by indulging in lobbying activities to gain entry to the country.
“The union cabinet today (Thursday) gave its approval for one month extension of the tenure of the one man committee under Justice Mukal Mudgal, former chief justice of Punjab and Haryana Court from May 1 to 31, 2013,” said an official statement.
“The committee is inquiring into media reports concerning Walmart,” it added.
The committee was set up Jan 24 and supposed to file its report within three months.
The lobbying issue had rocked parliament’s winter session in December.
Lobbying is not permitted in India but it is allowed in the US with proper disclosure.
