Srinagar: Cautioning that depletion of Water Resources and water contamination has assumed an alarming proportion exposing survival of the mankind to a great threat, the Kashmir Minister for PHE;, Irrigation & Flood Control, Mr. Mohammad Dilawar Mir today called upon the engineering fraternity to rise to the occasion and strive hard to protect the humanity from this man made catastrophe.
Speaking at the inaugural session of seminar on “Peoples participation in conservation of water resources and preservation of Its quality here today, the Minister said that human greed has ruthlessly spoiled the green cover and Water resources like rivers and water bodies adding that if early measures are not taken to check the menace, the spread of water borne diseases would take an ugly and irreversible turn.
The seminar was organized by the Institution of Engineers (India) J&K State Centre In connection with Water Resources Day.
Chief Engineer PHE. Irrigation & Flood Control I Mr. G M Oar, Chairman J&K Chapter Of Inetitutlor1 of Engineers ( India), Er. Peerzada Mumtaz Ahmed and both retired and serving senior engineers of the State were present on the occasion
The Minister called for launching a vigorous campaign to educate people about their social obligation to remove latrines and other encroachments rose on the banks of rivers and water bodies. He urged for encouraging community participation for this purpose. He assured full Government support and assistance for various water conservation programmes and hoped that the recommendations of the seminar would prove beneficial in conserving the water resources in the state.
A power point presentation on pathetic condition of river Jhelum and various conservation measures taken by the Government to preserve it was also made by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Kashmir on the occasion.
