Tehran : Iran called on Iraq Tuesday to abide by Algiers Accord signed by the two neighbous in 1975.
The document delineates clearly the land and water borders between the two countries and can never be changed unilaterally, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammad Ali Husseini said in a press release here.
The statement is a reaction to the announcement of cancellation of the document by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.
The cancellation of the document is unjustifiable and has no legal basis, the spokesman underscored.
He expressed hope that Talabani would comply with the previous commitments made by his country in line with the internationally recognized laws and norms.
Following the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Iran renewed commitment to the document which constituted the cornerstone of the policy of neighborliness and friendship between the two Muslim nations, Husseini asserted.
The border accords between nations cannot be changed by wars or regime changes, he noted.
Meanwhile chairman of the Iranian Majlis (parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boujerdi said in a press conference he expected Talabani would deny the reported cancellation of the accord.
The document is registered by the United Nations, Boujerdi noted, questioning the authenticity of the reports attributed to Talabani.
