Protests on fifth anniversary of Batla House shootout

    New Dellhi: Several civil society groups, students’ bodies and Muslim political parties staged dharna and protests to mark the 5th anniversary of the alleged Batla House encounter on September 19, believed by large section of civil society to be fake.

    In 2008 on 19th September, on 4th floor of L-18, Batla House in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar area, two youths of Azamgarh were killed in a shootout, which was later claimed to be an encounter by special cell of Delhi police. In this shootout, one of the officers of Delhi police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma also lost his life. However, from the very first day Human and Civil Rights’ organistions and activists are demanding an independent judicial enquiry into the shootout. The post-mortem report of the deceased also pointed towards the encounter being a fake one.



    Campus Front of India Delhi state organised a “Students’ March for Justice” from L18 to Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. The protest was led by the national president Abdul Nazar.

    The protesters raised slogan against the witch hunt of Muslim youth and alleged state terrorism. They reiterated the demand for an independent impartial enquiry in the Batla House killings. There was heavy deployment of the police force. The march concluded at Jamia Millia Islamia.



    Rashtriya Ullema Council had also organised a rally at Jantar Mantar, where in hundreds of demonstrators had come by train from Azamgarh to participate.
