The official Syrian News Agency (SANA) attributed to an official government source his denial of any message given to Egypt to be delivered to Israel on behalf of Syria.

Some News sources had reported earlier that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak conveyed a message from Syria to Israel during his meeting Wednesdat in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

The denial comes on the eve of a visit to Syria by a delegation from the American Congress headed by Senator Arlen Specter, coming from Israel. Specter stated that the Prime Minister of Israel Ehud Olmert will send with him a message to the Syrian leadership about Syria’s intention to conduct peace negotiations with Israel.

It is expected that Specter would be in Damascus next Saturday to hold talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and senior Syrian officials that will focus on the situation in the Middle East, particularly the occupied Palestinian territories in the light of ongoing negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides after the Annapolis conference.

The talks will aslo deal with the situation in Iraq and Lebanon and the peace process especially on the Syrian-Israeli track, and the relations between Syria and the United States.
