Cairo : At least three policemen were killed and nine others injured when gunmen opened fire at a security check-point in Egypt, an official here said Tuesday.
Three militants Monday night stepped out of a car and opened fire randomly on a security checkpoint outside the Al-Azhar University, the top Sunni Islam learning institution in the world, here and fled the scene, an interior ministry statement said.
The death toll may rise as two of the injured were in serious condition, it added.
The attack came as about 250 students of the university were protesting against the Egyptian military which removed Islamist leader Mohamed Morsi last year.
The supporters of Morsi also blocked roads, assaulted citizens and shops and threw Molotov cocktails at policemen, the statement added.
