S. Lankan Army claims to have occupied LTTE territory; rebels denounce claim

New Delhi : Sri Lanka Wednesday claimed to have occupied territory held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the Northwestern Mannar province, after a severe clash. “One sq km in LTTE controlled areas was captured by government troopers Tuesday in the north of Parappakandal in Mannar,” a Sri Lankan defence ministry official told reporters at Colombo today, news agency Press Trust of India reported. At least 19 LTTE rebels were killed and over 30 injured in the battle, the official said. However, the pro-LTTE website Tamilnet claimed that Sri Lankan army failed to capture the rebel-held territory. Tamilnet also claimed that while four government soldiers were killed, the LTTE suffered no casualties.
