Jammu : Stating that roots of corruption are deep and spread widely in the society, Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Muzaffar Hussain Baig said “an honest person feels suffocated in the grim, unscrupulous and dishonest situation where corruption looms the large. I some times feel hurt and think of leaving the chair”, he said.

Intervening in the discussion on the issue of corruption in Legislative Assembly today, Mr. Baig said that it was very difficult for a person who believed in truthfulness and transparency to work in a situation which was full of corrupt practices from top to bottom. “The menace of corruption has grown so vast and gigantic that it has attained a position of cancer which oozes awful discharge regularly polluting society”, he said and added that a collective approach and unified drive from all was required to uproot it from the society.

He said Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad whether in Centre or in the state stood like a rock against the corruption and championed the cause of transparency. However, he quickly added that a person or two cannot clean the society alone from the evil like corruption.

“There is scarcity of principals and values, and we are living under this condition”, he said adding that without scoring points against each other we have to work together to change the trend.

“It is easy to ask for eradication of corruption but very difficult to weed it out and cut the tentacles of monster. ‘Rashvat kay khilaf bolna alag hai aur rashvat ki lash ko kanday per utha kar dafan kar nay kay liye zameen doondna alag baat ha’.

Quoting Upanishads that ‘no matter how bright the fire is, there is bound to be smoke’, Mr. Baig said that politics was a coal mine where even a cleanly dressed was prone to stains.

We require moral courage and resilience to fight corruption at all levels and free the society from its evils, he said and added in an emotional outburst “agar mera kursi per betnay say koi farq nahi padta, tou mai kursi per betna nahi chahta houn”. “If my sitting on the chair of power does not deliver, it is better to leave it”.
