Tejpal, assistant sub-inspector at the Shalimar Bagh police station in northwest Delhi, was arrested for injuring 22-year-old Rajni while he was cleaning the service weapon inside the police station.

Rajni, who suffered an injury on her right toe, was admitted to a local hospital, where her condition was stated to be stable.

“Tejpal was checking the 9 mm pistol and counting the cartridges, after Rajni handed him the charge around 8.40 a.m., when the gun misfired. The bullet first hit the ground and its splinters struck Rajni,” a police official said.

Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat denied any foul play in the shooting incident.

“A case of mishandling the fire-arm was registered and the constable was arrested and suspended. He was later released on bail,” Bhagat told IANS.

“We don’t suspect any foul play. The victim too has not filed any complaint,” he added.

On Sunday, a CISF official posted at the Red Fort was suspended for firing 19 rounds in air after being apparently denied leave. Nobody was injured in the firing.

CISF spokesperson Vertul Singh said Shranappa Pujari was suspended after the incident on charges of mishandling the weapon. However, no police case was registered.
