New Delhi : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been unable to procure an officially translated copy of an Argentine court ruling that rejected its plea to extradite Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi for his alleged role in the Bofors payoff case, the Supreme Court was told Tuesday.
Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanian told a bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan that the agency was unable to secure the officially translated copy of the court order despite its best efforts.
The government’s law officer, however, subsequently submitted to the court a copy of the order translated from Spanish into English.
After receiving the translated copy of the order, the bench adjourned the matter for three weeks for further hearing.
The apex court on Nov 26 had granted the CBI time to file a “true and correct translation” into English of the Argentine court order.
The apex court had directed the CBI to file the June 8 order of the El Dorado court in Argentina, which had turned down India’s plea for extradition of 69-year-old businessman.
Argentine authorities had detained Quattrocchi Feb 6 last year on the basis of a Red Corner notice. He was released on bail Feb 23.
