London : A Baroda-born man serving a 30-year jail sentence for planning terrorist attacks in Britain and America has dropped charges against a fellow prisoner who threw boiling water over him.
Dhiren Barot, a London-based Hindu who converted to Islam, needed a week of secret hospital treatment, including skin grafts, after he received severe burns at the high-security Frankland Prison in Durham in July 2007.
Police called for a news blackout during his stay at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in the town of Newcastle upon Tyne for Barot’s safety.
A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said Friday the terrorist had decided to drop charges against Gary Moody, serving life for attacking students, who had been charged with assaulting and wounding Barot.
A spokesman for the service said: “The Crown Prosecutor dealing with the case considered that there were some gaps in the evidence and that a further statement was required from the injured party. The injured party declined to provide a further statement and also stated that he did not wish the prosecution to proceed.”
Barot, 35, was sentenced last November after being found guilty of planning to plant radioactive, chemical or toxic gas bombs and pack limousines with nails and explosives in Britain and America.
