MP Govt. to remit sentences of prisoners on R-Day

Bhopal: On the occasion of Republic Day, the Madhya Pradesh Government has decided to give relaxation in the imprisonment of those inmates who are serving terms in Madhya Pradesh or other states’ jail after being convicted by judicial courts in Madhya Pradesh.

Accordingly, women prisoners who have served actual jail term of five years and prisoners who are totally blind or are suffering from contagious diseases like TB would be freed. The Jail Department has issued orders to this effect.

Those prisoners who have completed 15 years after their imprisonment before December 18, 1978 would be released unconditionally. Similarly, those prisoners would also be released unconditionally who have been serving jail term since after December 18, 1978 and have completed 14 years’ imprisonment. Those women prisoners who have not been sentenced to life imprisonment but have served actual jail term of five or more years would also be released from jails.

Except for the prisoners serving life imprisonment, four months’ relaxation in the jail term of those prisoners would be given who have completed 10 years in jail. Similarly, those who have served five-year jail term would be given three months’ relaxation, two months relaxation to those who have served jail term between three to five years, one and half months relaxation to those prisoners who have been in jails for two to three years and one month’s relaxation would be given to those who have served jail terms between one to two years. Similarly, 15 and seven days’ relaxation would be given to those prisoners who have served one year and six months’ terms respectively.

Similarly, those prisoners who have not been sentenced to life imprisonment and are totally blind would be entitled to be released from jail. Those prisoners would also be released unconditionally, who are suffering from cancer and TB and are on the verge of death and about whom medical certificates have been issued by the District Medical Board. Prisoners aged 60 years or more who have completed half of their jail term would also be released from jail on January 26, 2008.

The Madhya Pradesh Government has decided not to give any relaxation in the jail term of those prisoners whose investigation has been made by Delhi Special Police Establishment or any other competent authority and who have been found guilty of misappropriation of or damage to a property belonging to the Union Government. Habitual offenders, security deposit defaulters and those jailed for not paying fine would also be not be entitled to relaxation.

The prisoners booked under Dowry Prohibition Act, Prevention of Corruption Act, National Security Act, Drugs and Cosmetics Act, Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, Employees Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, Essential Commodities Act, Protection of Civil Rights Act, Customs Act, Madhya Pradesh Excise Act, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act would also not be entitled for any relaxation.
