Irfan Pathan has opened the Indian innings for the first time in an away Test – also the first time he has opened in the first innings.

However, Pathan has opened the Indian innings on three occasions, making six against England at Mumbai and 93 against Sri Lanka in Delhi – both in the 2005-06 season – and nine against Australia at Adelaide Thursday. Against England and Sri Lanka, he was a makeshift opener while against Australia he played as a specialist opener.
