Koreas Restart Military Talks

Seoul : North and South Korea began military conversations again Friday, to discuss security and merchandise transport on the frontier, the South Korean Defense Ministry reported.

The meeting in the demilitarized region of Panmunjom is mainly to analyze the work of a railway for transporting merchandise north and south. and to establish military security guarantees to reinforce mutual confidence.

The delegation of South Korea is led by Col. Lee Sang-chol and North Korea’s by Col.Park Rim-su.

The last meeting between North and South, which included defense ministers, took place in November to discuss differences over a common fishing area in the peninsula’s West Sea of the peninsula.

A new encounter is planned to reach agreement on that issue and set up maritime frontier limits, where armed confrontations between vessels of both countries took place in the past.

Such meetings were agreed upon during the historic summit in October in Pyongyang between then South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.
