Egypt offers more food, medicine for Palestinians in Gaza

Cairo : An Egyptian charity body has sent a convoy of some 50 tons of food and medicine to the Palestinians suffering a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, the official MENA news agency reported on Sunday.

The food and medicine would be distributed among the people in Gaza to help them face Israel’s policy of blockade, deputy board chairman of the Abul-Enein Charity Somaya Abul-Enein was quoted assaying.

The relief is part of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s directives to the civil society to help the Palestinians, said the report.

Mubarak has pledged that his country would not allow the starvation of the Palestinians in Gaza.

On Friday, Egypt’s Doctors Syndicate sent a convoy of 40 tons of meat and other foodstuff as well as six tons of medicines into Gaza.

In addition, a four-truck convoy carrying some 200 tons of wheat, rice, other foodstuff and medicines offered by the Egyptian Shari’a Association on Friday reached Palestinians who have flooded into the Egyptian side of Rafah crossing.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian-Gaza border remained open for the fifth consecutive day on Sunday as Egyptian security forces are girding up to take actions to close the border.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza have crossed into Egypt to purchase daily necessities after Palestinian militants blew up holes in the concrete wall separating southern Gaza and Egypt on early Wednesday.
