It seems that Banaras Hindu University cannot part ways with controversies. On Tuesday night, BHU Proctor Prof Royana Singh uninstalled poster of a seminar organised on the death anniversary of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar after she received complaints from various individual students that Ambedkar is a “political personality”. However, Royana Singh had to reinstall the poster after students from SC/ST Sangharsh Morch gheraoed the proctor’s office on Tuesday night.

The students SC/ST community of BHU is organising a seminar at the university’s KN Uduppa auditorium on Wednesday, December 6. Regarding the same, a large poster was installed on Mahila Mahavidyalaya fairway – around hundred meters inside of BHU’s main gate.

On Tuesday evening, various students of the university – all from the upper caste community – started protesting against the installation of the poster. The argument of the students was that Kanshiram – whose image was on the poster also – is a political personality and hence the poster should be removed immediately.

Prof Royana Singh, the Chief Proctor at Banaras Hindu University, ordered the removal of poster of a seminar organized on the death anniversary of Bhimrao Ambedkar. The step was taken after few Savarna students objected the presence of Kanshiram in poster as political personality

On hearing about the protest, the Chief Proctor of the University Prof Royana Singh reached the spot and ordered the security personnel to take the poster down. The seminar organising committee has alleged that Royana Singh did not ask them once the purpose behind the installation of the poster or about the use of Kanshiram in the same.

However, after successful removal of the poster, students from SC/ST Sangharsh Morcha, accompanied by the organising committee sat on protest around Chief Proctor’s officer.

Seeing the protest growing, Royana Singh immediately ordered to reinstall the poster and by early Wednesday morning, the poster was back.

However, the names are yet to be verified by the authorities.

By the time the story was filed, the same opposing students tore out the poster. One of the students involved in the protest said, “Kanshiram was not who represented BHU and Malviya values. That is why we took this step.”
