New Delhi : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh Monday expressed satisfaction over the outcome of the talks between the Rajasthan government and Gujjars in Jaipur, which led to the latter calling off their weeklong agitation.
Speaking to reporters here, Rajnath Singh said: "The agitation over the issue of reservation by the Gujjar community in Rajasthan and some other neighbouring states has finally reached a satisfactory and harmonious conclusion."
He thanked leaders of the Gujjar and Meena communities for playing a constructive role in the talks with the government.
The Gujjar community had launched the agitation Tuesday demanding Scheduled Tribe status with a view to gain from reservations for the category and improve their socio-economic conditions. However, the agitation took a violent turn, leading to 25 deaths in four days.
In the fifth round of talks Monday, the BJP government in Rajasthan led by Vasundhara Raje promised the community to set up a committee to study their demand.
The BJP president conveyed his heartfelt condolences and sympathies to families of those killed in the agitation.
