Ramallah : A leader from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement expressed hope on Wednesday that Egypt’s talks with Hamas and Abbas on Rafah border crossing would lead to dialogue between the two rival movements.
Representatives of Hamas and President Abbas arrived in Cairo Wednesday upon an invitation from Egypt to discuss ways of officially reopening Rafah border crossing in the wake of troubles on Gaza-Egypt frontiers.
An aide to Abbas announced that the president will not talk with Hamas while the Islamic movement hopes to get the chance for talks with Abbas since the two were in Cairo.
“We hope this chance be a good beginning to reunite the Palestinian people by efforts from Egypt,” said Taisseer Nassrallah, a Fatah leader.
Hamas blew up the borders a week ago and enabled the Gazans, exhausted by six months of Israeli siege, to go to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsular to buy missing stuff. The move increased political efforts to reopen Rafah crossing.
Meanwhile, the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), a militant faction, urged Hamas and Fatah to take advantage from the Egyptian invitation and start mutual dialogue.
“It is the time for dialogue, unity and the good atmosphere,” a spokesman for the PRC said.
