The India event is part of Romexpo, a four-day expo that kicked off Tuesday, which is being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with the Indian embassy in Bucharest and the Indian ministry of commerce and industry.

The aim of the expo is to encourage trade between the two nations and build a strong image of Indian industry and its products in Romania.

Indian industry wants to leverage the excellent geographical position of Romania in central Europe, allowing a good access to the markets of western, eastern and south-east Europe.

Indian firms are keen to enter the Romanian market, which is the second largest in central Europe after Poland.

"Between 2002 and 2006, the commercial trade between Romania and India increased by almost four times, from $131.6 million in 2001 to $475.4 million in 2006," Ram Mohan, India's ambassador to Romania, said during the inauguration of the expo.

He said that in less than 10 years, India will represent one of the most important trade and business partners for Romania.

CII deputy director general Gurpal Singh underlined the need to further increase bilateral trade between the two countries.

"We would like to see Romania becoming one of India's largest business partners, offering long-term profitable business relations. India has an enormous development potential, lower costs, excellent quality of the products and very good time frame for delivery," he said.
