Yaounde (Chad) : The Chadian Army said that it has driven the rebels out of the capital N’Djamena and also repulsed an attack on the eastern town of Adre.
According to reports reaching here from N’Djamena, the army said late Sunday the security forces quashed the rebels’ offensive on the capital and forced them to retreat.
The rebels now pose no threat and the army troops are seeking a victory with hot pursuit, the statement added.
However, rebel forces said they had made a tactical withdrawal from the capital and were waiting for reinforcements from the east with fresh ammunition and supplies.
An estimated 2,000 rebels managed to penetrate into the Chadian capital of N’Djamena Saturday morning, clashing with government troops.
Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) has expressed concern over the fighting in Chad and called for an end to the conflict in the African country.
“The Presidency of the European Union expresses its great concern over the continued attempts of armed groups in Chad to seize power unconstitutionally. The Presidency calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities,” a statement from the current holder of the EU Presidency Slovenia said Sunday.
Expressing deep concern over the humanitarian and security situation of internally displaced people and refugees, the EU pledged close coordination with the UN to keep a multidimensional and international presence in Chad, adding that the EU fully supports the ongoing efforts by the UN and African Union in the region.
