New Delhi : The All India Tennis Association (AITA) Thursday appointed a three-member committee to look into all charges of corruption and alleged match-fixing from 1994 and also to frame structure a Code of Conduct for players.
Retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and Senior Vice President of Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) Sarabjit Singh will head the committee. The other two members are former Davis Cup player Akhtar Ali and Hon. Secretary of Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) V.K. Batra.
The three-member committee was finalised after a meeting of the the AITA office bearers — Secretary-General Anil Khanna, Joint Secretary Bharat Oza and Treasurer Prof T.D. Francis here this morning.
The AITA decided to form the Code of Conduct Committte after Mahesh Bhupathi made a stunning disclosure during the Australian Open that he was approached for tanking a Davis Cup match early in his career.
The committee will inquire into cases if any dating back to 1994, and find out if players, coaches, trainers, umpires, referees, tournament directors, organisers and officials, have ever been approached by known or unknown persons to influence the result of a match.
The committee can recommend action against any individual found guilty.
