Islamabad : At least five people were killed during Pakistan’s parliamentary and provincial assembly elections in which tens of thousands voted across the country Monday amid fears of terror threats.
Balloting closed at 5 p.m., but officials allowed all those who were still in the polling stations to cast their votes.
In isolated incidents of violence in different places, five people were reported killed and about 20 injured, official sources said.
One man was killed in Dadu in Sindh province when supporters of slain former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid who opened gun fire at one another.
Details of the other deaths were not immediately available.
President Pervez Musharraf voted in Rawalpindi. Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif cast his ballot in Lahore.
Asif Ali Zardari, who heads the PPP after assassination of his wife Benazir, voted at Nawabshah in Sindh where his sister is contesting the National Assembly seat.
