Beijing : Groundbreaking for construction of China’s future highest building – 1,902.89 feet – will begin this year in Shanghai, with completion expected in 2010.
This huge structure will overtake the Taipei 101 in Taiwan that holds the current record, as well as surpass the 1,611.55 foot Shanghai World Trade Center due to be inaugurated this year.
According to the China Daily newspaper, the Shanghai center will have spaces for offices, hotels, shopping centers and recreational facilities.
However, the Shanghai Center will not hold the world height record because the gigantic Burj Dubai (2,649.93 feet) is being built in that emirate of the Persian Gulf, and which will surpass both the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada and the Sears Tower in Chicago, IL (1,815 and 1,730 feet respectively).
Shanghai, with the largest concentration of financial and economic resources, has a large number of buildings that are among the highest of the world.
