Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati receives as many as 2,500 letters from common people every day.
However, at least 20 percent of these are without the necessary postage stamps and find their way back to the Returned Letter Office (RLO).
A postal employee told IANS on condition of anonymity: “The letters without stamps are apparently from people living in abject poverty, or they are jail inmates who do not have access to postage stamps.”
According to official records at the special cell handling the chief minister’s mail at the local post office here, the number of letters addressed to the chief minister has gone up substantially ever since Mayawati came to power.
“Last month we received close to 75,000 letters addressed to the chief minister. These included 7,500 letters received through speed post, about 24,000 through registered post and as many as 43,000 by ordinary mail,” an employee said.
