Choose between nuclear deal and government: Left parties warn government

NEW DELHI, Feb 25 (APP): The Left parties in India have given a fresh warning to the Congress-led government to choose between the “Indo-US nuclear agreement or the government”.

Reactions from the Left parties came when Indian President Pratibha Patil in her address at the joint session of Parliament supported the agreement.

M K Pandhe, senior leader of Communist Party (CPI-M) while talking to newsmen said the government would suffer if it breached the commitment of not going ahead with the nuclear deal.

D Raja, CPI National Secretary said Left parties were firm to their position on nuclear deal. It is for the government to decide.

President Pratibha Patil’s comments on the nuclear deal were not the view of the Parliament on the issue, he observed.

The Left parties have been opposing the nuclear deal for the last several months as they said with this deal the sovereignty of India and its foreign policy will be affected.

India is engaged in negotiations with IAEA for a safeguards agreement but according to the understanding with the Left parties the government has to present the draft agreement to the committee for approval before finalising it.
