This recent media reported statement of former US Ambassador to Pakistan, Wendy Chamberlin, who now heads Washington think tank, is well intentioned and deserves to be taken seriously – “[Wendy has proposed the appointment of US envoy and said that it was this dispute only (disputed state of Kashmir, which one part of Kashmir is ruled by India and other divided part by Pakistan and China) which had brought the two countries on the verge of a nuclear war. She said this issue is also coming in the way of restoration of peaceful relationship between Pakistan-India. Chamberlin added that if the Kashmir issue is resolved then extremism could also be curbed down. This will ultimately lead to peace in South Asia.]”.

Wendy need not be deterred by the fact that Bush administration is in its last year of tenure because also the next regime at Washington will certainly approve and continue this peace initiative as it is the national policy (which cuts even across party lines) of USA, to support any move and program for world peace.

Hence Wendy ought to mobilize Bush Administration (including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice) to pronounce the immediate appointment of:-

(1)- US Envoys to India, Pakistan & China so that they may immediately start dialogue with concerned governments and with the leaders of J&K (from both sides of LOC).

(2)- High ranking US diplomat who will coordinate the activities of these US Envoys and will also ensure a time bound Kashmir solution, may be even by mobilizing world community / forum (UN, EU etc.).

Kashmiri leaders (from both sides of LOC) should utilize this opportunity to persuade USA to heed the proposal of Wendy for the said appointment of US envoys.

Yours truly
