Jamir to take additional charge of Maharashtra Sunday

Mumbai : Goa Governor S.C. Jamir will take additional charge of Maharashtra on Sunday in the wake of S.M. Krishna’s resignation earlier this week.

Bombay High Court Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar will administer the oath of office to Jamir.

President Pratibha Patil appointed Jamir to discharge the functions of Maharashtra governor until a regular arrangement is made for the post.

Jamir, 77, will Monday deliver the customary budget session address to the joint session of Maharashtra legislative assembly and council.

Born in 1931 in Ungma village in Nagaland, Jamir studied law, but joined politics during his student days at Allahabad University.

He was elected as the first Lok Sabha member from Nagaland in 1961. He served in various capacities in the central government, including as a minister handling different portfolios.

He was first elected to the Nagaland assembly in 1971 and has an unbroken record of winning every time he contested.

He became chief minister of the state in 1980 and went on to have the longest tenure in that post. He was appointed Goa governor in June 2004.
