Blasts Belarus Attempt to Expel Diplomat

Washington : The United States on Friday condemned Belarus’ for its “unjustified” attempts to expel the U.S. ambassador from the country.

“We strongly regret this unjustified action by the Belarussian government. This is deeply disappointing and only takes them further away from Europe and the rest of the world,” said White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe.

The comments came after Belarus said it was recommending that the U.S. ambassador leave, and announced that it would withdraw its own ambassador to Washington.

The statement by a Belarus’ Foreign Ministry came after the United States criticized the country for its treatment of an imprisoned opposition leader.

“It is unfortunate that Belarus continues its repressive actions against its own citizens and President Bush and the United States will continue to stand with the people of Belarus as they seek to live in freedom,” Johndroe said.
