Shortly before closing the 8,000 polling stations distributed throughout the country, the Electoral Commission reported that 58 percent of 10.92 million people have voted.

The commission’s secretary Kamaruzaman Mohd Noor stated that all authorities attending the process from distant towns of the Borneo Island to the largest cities of peninsular Malaysia made important efforts in the operation.

“These have been the best elections for years, because there has not been any altercation in polling stations and voters could fulfill their rules,” Noor stated.

Elections took place in a peaceful atmosphere, except a protest in the northern state of Terengganu, where 22 people were detained.
