“We are in a very difficult situation but it is important to get the crossings open particularly Gaza and I think there the Egyptian effort with the Israelis and others are very important,” she told reporters here this morning ahead of an EU foreign ministers’ meeting.

“We support (PA Prime Minister) Salam Fayyad with his ideas to have Palestinian Authority there,” added Ferrero-Waldner.

A senior Israeli defence ministry official held talks in Cairo at the weekend a few days after talks between Hamas and Egyptian officials seen as Egypt’s mediation role to calm the situation after the recent upsurge in violence in which over 100 Palestinians, including 20 children, were killed by Israeli troops in the Gaza strip. On Iran, Ferrero-Waldner said the EU foreign ministers will discuss how to implement the third UNSC resolution. Last week, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1803 which imposes more sanctions to press Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment activities.

On Lebanon, she said we are looking towards the Arab League because it is trying to reach a compromise and we support the Arab League.
