Islamabad : President Pervez Musharraf is likely to announce date for the 1st session of the National Assembly by Thursday, the Law Minister said Monday.
Victors of the February 18 parliamentary elections are demanding early summoning of the National Assembly session to elect the new Prime Minister.
The elections were mostly won by opposition parties Pakistan Peoples Party of slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and PML-N party of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Sharif and PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari yesterday agreed to form coalition government in the center and in the country’s biggest province Punjab.
The two leaders had called for the convening of the National Assembly session to elect the new Prime Minister.
Law Minister Iqbal Haider said that the Prime Minister secretariat was scheduled to forward a summary to the President on Monday.
“The President would either set a date for the assembly session on Wednesday or Thursday, ” Haider told Geo television.
“It is discretionary powers of the President to summon the National Assembly session,” he said.
In the first session, the members-elect will take oath as members of the National Assembly, lower house of the parliament and will elect Speaker and deputy speaker.
The house will also elect the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister will be from the PPP, according to the agreement, however the PPP has not yet named anyone for the post.
