Call for code of conduct for charity works in Muslim countries

Dakar : Humanitarian organizations in the Muslim countries called for mapping out a code of conduct for humanitarian and charitable works in the member countries of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). The First Conference of Humanitarian Organizations in the OIC member states, which concluded on Sunday at Sally Portudal resort in Senegal, came out with this proposal. The three-day meeting adopted several recommendations, to be presented to the 11th Summit of OIC, which will begin here on Thursday.

The recommendations also included establishment, within the OIC, a Centre for Studies, Information and Training concerning with the work of organizations, disasters, crises and development needs in the member states. The Conference also called for energizing the role of Zakat, endowments, financing and local donations in member states to support charitable and humanitarian action and fill up the legislative gaps therein.

The participants also recommended the appointment of goodwill ambassadors for the OIC consisting of eminent personalities in order to encourage coordination and partnership between humanitarian organizations. The participants also issued a declaration on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

A delegation representing the participants met with Senegalese President Abdoulaye WADE in the presence of the Secretary General of OIC Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu at the Presidential Palace and presented the final communiqué and a message addressed to leaders of the Muslim World during the Summit.
