New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday sanctioned Rs.200,000 for the treatment of Manjunath Kalmani, a software engineer who was paralysed in an accident in the US six years ago and sent back to India last week.
“The prime minister has sanctioned an assistance of Rs.2 lakh (Rs.200,000) from the PM’s National Relief Fund to Manjunath Kalmani who is hospitalised in the Safdarjung Hospital,” a PMO spokesperson stated.
A senior officer of the PMO visited Manjunath in hospital Tuesday and handed over the cheque to the hospital authorities for his treatment. The prime minister has extended his best wishes to Manjunath and his family.
Manjunath, a software engineer working in the US, met with an accident May 1, 2002, when he car swung out of control and hit a tree. He was paralysed neck down and has been undergoing treatment in Northside Hospital, Atlanta. He was sent back to India last week after his visa period expired.
Manjunath, only 32 years old, met his mother Vidyawati in Delhi. He had not met her for the past eight years. His father is a farmer. The family, based in Kopal, Karnataka, has stated that they were too poor to take care of him.
