London : Four civilians have been killed in an air strike in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, the British defence ministry said.
The air strike Tuesday was called in by British troops after they were caught in a Taliban ambush at an undisclosed location, it said Wednesday.
The four bodies and one injured person were found as soldiers went to inspect the area. Unconfirmed reports said the dead were two women and two children.
“We can confirm British forces were involved in an operation in the south of Helmand Province. We deeply regret that this incident happened and do everything we can to mitigate this from happening,” the statement by the ministry said.
